What happens when teenage girls aged 13 – 17 get pregnant?

Teen Mum School
1x 60 BBC2 12th May 2008

This observational documentary - made by award-winning Films of Record - looks at life in a pupil referral unit for school age girls (under 16’s) who are either pregnant or have recently become a mum. With a crèche where the girls can leave their babies, it is not a typical high school. It is one of a small number of specialist pupil referral units around the UK for school girls who choose not to terminate their pregnancies or for whom termination isn’t an option.

Teachers, specialist midwives and health workers help the students prepare for their labour and motherhood while they also study for SATs and GCSEs. Lessons range from English, maths and cookery to safe-sex, birth plans, bottle feeding and baby-baths.

This insightful and touching documentary shows the work of the dedicated Headmistress and staff and intertwines the girl’s personal stories with their daily life at school, following some of the pupils as they struggle balancing being a teen mum with getting an education.
