In Search of Law and Order - UK

Reforming young offender

IN SEARCH OF LAW AND ORDER
(3 x )
TX: October 1995, Channel 4

A major three part series examining the justice system and its treatment of persistent young offenders, and asking what can be done to break the spiral of offending and fear.

It examines:

  • Policing - how can police build trust and solve long term problems?
  • Sentencing - Is it a lottery. DO we expect too much from the courts? And what can be done for victims and offenders who must go on living side by side?
  • Punishment - For many crime DOES pay. Prison is just a college for crime and drugs. What else can give them a reason to stop?

Editor: Tom Schwalm
Producer: Lol Lovett
Writer and Producer: Roger Graef

Quotes

"an excellent, provocative series about the way in which our system of justice is failing to stop young offenders re-offending."
Brian Viner, Mail on Sunday

"Graef has been observing crime rather longer than Michael Howard and is both wary of easy cures and curious about genuine remedies."
Allison Pearson,
The Observer

"a fascinating and disturbing programme, with eye-opening interviews with some thoroughly unpleasant young criminals."
Peter Paterson, Daily Mail
