Panorama Special - The Truth About Adoption

BBC1

December 05 2011

Adoption is now high on the political agenda as the best option for the 65,000 children in care. But less than 5% are placed for adoption.  Children wait an average 2 years and 7 months for a permanent family. Why does it take so long? What is the human cost?

Films of Record followed six children in Coventry waiting to be adopted over 6 months. Some have waited five years. Others were returned after 3 years with a prospective family. This film is the first to address adoption breakdown. The children’s pain and longing is tangible.
